Recantina

A red of the Montello and Asolo hills in the Veneto, permitted in the Montello Asolo appellation alongside Merlot and the Cabernets. It gives a dark, spicy wine with plum and black pepper and is the most interesting thing to look for in a zone otherwise given to Bordeaux varieties.

Worth knowing

It has been known around Treviso since at least the 1600s and declined badly after phylloxera. Growers now distinguish three forms: Recantina a pecolo scuro, with a dark stalk, Recantina a pecolo rosso, with a red one, and Recantina Forner, named after the family on whose farm it was found.
