Riesling Italico

Also called Welschriesling.

A white grown in the Oltrepò Pavese, the Colli Bolognesi and parts of the northeast, giving a light, high acid, faintly bitter wine with little aroma. It is a modest variety and it is usually a component rather than the point of a bottle.

Worth knowing

It is not Riesling. It is Welschriesling, an unrelated variety that has borrowed the name across central Europe, and the resemblance ends at the acidity. Italian labels increasingly say Riesling Italico precisely to keep the two apart.
