The reliable partner in Valpolicella, Bardolino and Amarone, grown for its consistent crop and its thick skins, which dry well. It gives colour and a light, slightly herbal red fruit character without much structure or aroma of its own.
Worth knowing
It is in the blend because it is dependable rather than because it is good. It resists disease, it sets fruit every year, and it takes the long drying for Amarone without rotting, which is a set of virtues that has nothing to do with flavour.
