Sagrantino
The red of Montefalco in Umbria, and one of the most tannic wines made anywhere. Deep, dark and firm, with blackberry, tar and a dense structure that needs years and a great deal of skill in the cellar. It was traditionally made sweet as a passito, and the dry version is a recent invention.
Worth knowing
Measurements of its polyphenol content put it at or near the top of every list of tannic grape varieties. The dry Montefalco Sagrantino that built its reputation only appeared in the 1970s, so the wine most people think of as ancient is younger than the producers making it.
