What makes it special

Tuscany's quieter neighbour. Orvieto has been one of Italy's famous white wines for centuries, and Montefalco's Sagrantino is one of the most powerful reds in the country.

What makes it unique

Sagrantino carries more tannin than almost any other grape, and for most of its history it was made as a sweet passito. The dry Montefalco Sagrantino that built its modern reputation is a comparatively recent development.

Why you should care

Umbria sits between Rome and Florence, and most travellers drive straight through. Stop in Montefalco or Orvieto and you find serious wine, hill towns and prices that have not caught up with Tuscany's.
