Red
Schioppettino
A red from Prepotto in eastern Friuli, on the Slovenian border, with a pronounced black pepper note over red fruit, high acid and moderate tannin. It is medium bodied and lifted rather than heavy, and it is one of the most distinctive reds in the northeast.
Worth knowing
It was left off the list of permitted varieties after phylloxera and effectively became illegal to plant. Prepotto growers kept it going anyway, and a local campaign in the 1970s got it readmitted, which is why a grape this good was nearly lost to paperwork.
