Teroldego

The red of the Campo Rotaliano, a flat gravel plain north of Trento left by two rivers, where it is trained on pergolas and gives deep colour, firm acid and blue and black fruit with an almond bitterness on the finish. Yields were historically enormous and the growers who cut them make something serious.

Worth knowing

It is a parent of Lagrein and a full sibling of Dureza, the French grape that is a parent of Syrah, which makes Teroldego an uncle of Syrah. DNA work found the link, and nobody had suspected it from looking at the vines. The gravel plain it grows on is small enough to see across.
