Timorasso

A white of the Colli Tortonesi in southeastern Piedmont, with real weight, firm acid and a mineral, almost waxy texture that fills out over several years in bottle. Young it can seem tight and unremarkable. At five or six years it turns into one of the most serious white wines in northern Italy.

Worth knowing

It had almost stopped existing. Growers had replaced it with easier, higher yielding varieties, and the revival from the 1980s onward was driven by a small number of Tortona producers who went looking for surviving plants. Most of what is in the ground now was planted within living memory.
