Tintilia

Molise's red, grown at altitude in the hills inland from the Adriatic. It gives a deeply coloured, firm, peppery wine with dark fruit and real acid, helped by the cool nights at four or five hundred metres. It came close to disappearing when growers replanted with higher yielding varieties.

Worth knowing

The name is usually traced to tinto, the Spanish for red, from the period of Bourbon rule in the south. It is a different grape from Bovale and from Tintore, both of which get confused with it on the strength of the name alone.
