Trebbiano Spoletino

An Umbrian white from around Spoleto and Montefalco, and a genuine outlier in the Trebbiano family: it has aroma, structure and acid that holds for years. Citrus, herbs and a saline finish, with enough weight to take skin contact or wood without falling apart.

Worth knowing

It survived because it was trained up living trees in the old maritata system, where a vine is married to an elm or a maple. Those plants were too awkward to grub up when the vineyards around them were replanted, so the grape came through by being inconvenient.
