White
Viognier
A Rhône white grown in small amounts in the Maremma and in Sicily, giving apricot, white flowers and a full, low acid body. In Tuscany it is usually a minority partner in a white blend, and in warm sites it can lose its acid and turn heavy.
Worth knowing
It is permitted in a handful of Italian appellations and planted in fewer, mostly by producers who wanted something aromatic to lift a blend built on neutral local whites. It is a recent arrival with no Italian history to speak of.
