Also called Moscato d'Alessandria.

Moscato d'Alessandria, grown on Pantelleria, a volcanic island closer to Tunisia than to Sicily. The wind is constant, so the vines are trained in hollows scooped out of the ground. It makes a dry white with orange peel and herbs, and the sweet Passito di Pantelleria, which is one of the great dessert wines of the Mediterranean.

Worth knowing

The training system, the alberello pantesco, was added to the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage in 2014. It is the vine growing itself that was recognised, not the wine, which is the only case of its kind.
