Now fully into its tertiary phase, the 2010 San Lorenzo Brunello di Montalcino is a beautiful expression of aged Sangiovese. An orange-brick core lightens to a pale orange rim, and the nose shows dried strawberry, dried leather, damp forest leaves, cocoa powder, and dried purple rose. A note of dark caramel runs from the aromatics through to the palate, where blood orange zest, dried black cherry, and a grind of black pepper join in. The tannins remain present and slightly chalky, giving the wine structure and length as it moves to a savory finish.
