Aglianico del Vulture DOC
Basilicata's only wine that matters commercially, and one of the best values in Italian red. The DOC bottlings are released younger than the Superiore and drink earlier: black cherry, plum, dried oregano, a smoky, ashy volcanic note, bright acidity and medium-plus tannin that's firm without being harsh. Good producers make it in a fresher style now, so a five-year-old bottle is at a lovely stage. Pair with lamb or anything off a grill.
