Aglianico
The serious red of the south, on the volcanic soils of Taurasi in Campania and Monte Vulture in Basilicata. It ripens so late that the harvest can run into November, after everything else is in. High acid, high tannin and dark, smoky, iron edged fruit. Young it is severe. Given a decade it turns into one of the best wines in the country, and one of the cheapest for what it is.
Worth knowing
Its picking date is the giveaway. In a country where most vineyards are finished by early October, Vulture growers are still waiting, sometimes into the first frosts, and that long hang time is where the structure comes from.
