Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG
The top tier of Vulture, with a minimum of 13% alcohol and at least a year in wood plus a year in bottle (two and two for Riserva). Volcanic soils and high vineyards give a dark, tightly wound red: black cherry, blackberry, tar, smoke, dried herbs and a mineral, almost iron edge, with high acidity and firm, grainy tannin. Expect wines that are austere at three years and only start to open at eight to ten. It's the southern answer to Barolo in structure, at a fraction of the price.
