Barbera del Monferrato Superiore DOCG
The oak-aged, ambitious tier of Monferrato Barbera, split off from the frizzante-friendly DOC in 2008. The wines are darker and more structured than most Barbera d'Asti at the same price, with black plum, dried cherry, balsamic notes and sweet spice from barrel, still carried by Barbera's tart acidity. Casalese producers around Vignale Monferrato (Accornero, Il Mongetto, Gaudio) make the best-known examples. Worth seeking as a cheaper alternative to Nizza with similar weight.
