Red
Aglianicone
A red grown in the upper Calore valley of inner Cilento, where it is permitted in Castel San Lorenzo alongside Barbera and Sangiovese. There is very little of it, it is almost all handled through the local cooperative, and it is the most interesting thing in an appellation otherwise built on grapes brought in from the north.
Worth knowing
The name makes it sound like a big version of Aglianico, and it spent a long time being treated as one. It is a distinct variety, and the confusion is a good example of how much Campanian grape identity rested on names rather than on vines.
