Castel San Lorenzo DOC
An odd DOC in the hills behind Paestum where Barbera, brought in generations ago, is the main red grape. The reds are juicy and simple, with red cherry, plum, low tannin and high acidity, closer to a rustic Piedmont Barbera than to anything Campanian; the Moscato lambiccato is a sweet, grapey local specialty. Aglianicone, a distinct grape long confused with Aglianico, was added and is the most interesting thing here. Production is small and almost entirely through the local cooperative.
