Bianchetta Genovese

A light Ligurian white from the hills behind Genoa, in the Val Polcevera and around Portofino. Low in alcohol, high in acid, with white flowers and a faint bitterness, meant to be drunk within the year and preferably within sight of the sea. It is usually blended with Vermentino, which gives it weight.

Worth knowing

It has nothing to do with the Bianchetta Trevigiana of the Veneto despite the shared name. Liguria grows it on terraces held up by dry stone walls that take more labour to maintain than the wine is worth, which is why there is so little of it.
