What makes it special

A thin arc of coast between France and Tuscany, with the mountains dropping almost straight into the sea. Vermentino and Pigato make salty, herb scented whites, and Rossese di Dolceacqua is one of Italy's most perfumed light reds.

What makes it unique

The Cinque Terre vineyards are terraces cut into cliffs above the water, many reachable only on foot or by small monorails that carry the harvest. Their sweet wine, Sciacchetrà, is made from grapes dried after picking.

Why you should care

Liguria makes very little wine and exports less, so most of it is drunk with the pesto and fish it was made for. The terraces are also being abandoned as people leave the land, which makes every bottle a vote to keep them.

7 of these still need a bottle. See them on the wanted list.
