White
Bianco d'Alessano
A Puglian white of the Itria valley, grown on limestone at altitude around Locorotondo and Martina Franca and blended there with Verdeca. It gives body, a soft citrus and almond character and moderate acid, rounding out the sharper grape it grows beside.
Worth knowing
Like Verdeca, it spent much of the twentieth century being grown as a base for vermouth production in the north. The Itria valley kept the vineyards going on that trade long after the wine itself had stopped being fashionable.
