WhiteLead grape in 1

Bosco

The main grape of the Cinque Terre, grown on terraces cut into cliffs above the Ligurian sea and reached by a monorail because there is no other way up. It gives body and a slightly resinous, saline character, blended with Albarola and Vermentino for freshness.

Worth knowing

Its sweet version, Sciacchetrà, is made from grapes dried indoors for months, and yields are extremely low. Producers quote very different figures for how much fresh fruit one bottle takes, and I could not verify any of them, so I have left the number out. The terraces themselves, cut into cliffs above the sea, are the real story.
