WhiteLead grape in 1
Caprettone
A white grown on the slopes of Vesuvius, where it makes the white version of Lacryma Christi. Volcanic soil, ungrafted vines in places, and a wine with citrus, herbs and a smoky mineral edge over firm acid.
Worth knowing
It spent a long time being recorded as Coda di Volpe until DNA work established it as a separate variety. Some of the vineyards it grows in have never been grafted onto American rootstock, because phylloxera does badly in loose volcanic ash.
