The wine of Vesuvius, sold as Lacryma Christi when it meets the Superiore requirements, which nearly all bottlings do. The white is Caprettone-based, with green apple, pear, chamomile, a smoky, sulfurous volcanic edge and a saline, slightly bitter finish; the red is a light-to-medium Piedirosso blend with sour cherry, red plum, ash and soft tannin. The volcanic sand kept phylloxera out, so old ungrafted vines are common. The name is a tourist draw, but producers like Casa Setaro, Sorrentino and Villa Dora make wines with real character.
