Malvasia del Lazio

Also called Malvasia Puntinata.

The better Malvasia of Frascati and the Roman hills, and the one that gives the wine whatever perfume it has. It is more aromatic and holds more acid than Malvasia di Candia, with apricot, orange blossom and a slightly bitter finish. Producers rebuilding Frascati's reputation have leant on it heavily.

Worth knowing

It is also called Malvasia Puntinata, meaning spotted, for the freckling on the ripe berries. Because it crops less than the Candia it sits beside, the twentieth century planted the wrong one, and putting that right has been slow work.
