WhiteLead grape in 1
Malvasia di Lipari
The white of the Aeolian islands north of Sicily, grown mostly on Salina on volcanic terraces above the sea. Dried in the sun after picking, it makes a sweet amber wine with apricot, orange peel and a resinous, herbal note, with the acid to keep it from being heavy.
Worth knowing
The vineyards were almost abandoned after the eruptions and emigration of the last century, and the wine survived on a handful of small plots. It is one of the few Italian dessert wines that is still made by drying grapes outdoors in full sun.
