Monica

A Sardinian red grown across the island, giving a soft, medium bodied wine with red cherry, a herbal note and light tannin. It is the everyday red of the island rather than its serious one, made to be drunk young and cool, and it does that job better than its reputation suggests.

Worth knowing

It is usually said to have come from Spain during the long Aragonese rule of Sardinia, which would put it alongside Cannonau and Carignano as an import that became native. Unlike those two, no convincing Spanish parent has been identified for it.
