Red
Nocera
A red of northeastern Sicily around Messina and across the strait in Calabria, giving high acid, firm tannin and dark fruit. It is a component of Faro and of several Calabrian reds, and it is rarely bottled on its own.
Worth knowing
It holds its acidity in serious heat while building high sugar, and its wine is dark enough to be known locally simply as black wine. It has become increasingly rare, down to a few scattered hectares mostly around Messina, where it remains an essential part of Faro.
