Red

Terrano

Also called Refosco d'Istria.

A red of the Carso, the limestone plateau above Trieste, grown in the iron rich red soil that gives the region its character. It has ferocious acidity, light tannin and a sharp, sour cherry and iron note, and it is an acquired taste that the locals acquired long ago.

Worth knowing

It is a member of the Refosco family and distinct from Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso. It was historically drunk as a tonic for its iron content, a claim about the soil transferring to the wine that has no basis but has never stopped being made.
