WhiteLead grape in 1
Vitovska
A white of the Carso, the limestone plateau above Trieste that runs across the Slovenian border. It gives a wine with pear, white flowers and a stony, saline finish, often made with extended skin contact, which suits its thick skins and turns it amber and tannic.
Worth knowing
The vineyards sit in red soil pockets in white karst rock, and there is so little topsoil that growers have historically carried it back uphill after rain. The grape is shared with Slovenia, where the same wines are made a few kilometres away under different paperwork.
