Bottle photo: Trebotti
Montepulciano goes by the name Violone in this corner of Lazio, and the 2022 Trebotti Castiglionero Violone from Lazio shows its savory, mountain-grown side. A glowing medium ruby-blue core moves to a neon lilac rim, and Italian prune plum, black pepper, dried marionberry, and dried oregano fill the nose. Faded rose and wild mountain herbs carry through on the palate with moderate tannins and moderate-plus acidity. The finish is long and distinctly salty.
