Grapes

White

Guarnaccia

The name covers two different grapes. Guarnaccia Bianca is a rare white of Calabria, grown almost only in the province of Cosenza and permitted in Terre di Cosenza, where it gives a pale, low acid, mildly aromatic wine. On Ischia a black Guarnaccia is used with Piedirosso in the island's reds.

Worth knowing

No historical document explains where either vine came from, and I have not been able to verify what the Ischia red is genetically or whether the two are related at all. This page covers both because the appellation rules use the same word.
