White
Mantonico
A Calabrian white grown in the south of the region, made dry and sweet. It has thick skins, firm acid and a nutty, honeyed character, and the dried sweet version from around Bianco is the historically important one.
Worth knowing
The name is generally traced to the Greek mantonikos, from mantis, a prophet or fortune teller. Local tradition adds that the grape arrived with the first Greek colonists at Locri and was used by priests in ceremonies, which is tradition rather than record.
