Grapes

White

Montonico

A white of Abruzzo and, under the same name, Calabria, giving a high acid, late ripening wine with citrus and a firm bitter finish. In Abruzzo it survives in the hills of Teramo and is being taken more seriously than it was.

Worth knowing

Montonico in Abruzzo and Mantonico in Calabria are different vines with names a letter apart, which has caused exactly the confusion you would expect. They are both late ripening whites with high acid, which does not help.
