Abruzzo

What makes it special
Mountains to the sea in a single region. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is one of Italy's best known reds, and its pink sibling, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, is one of the country's best rosatos.
What makes it unique
The vineyards sit between the Gran Sasso and Majella massifs and the Adriatic, so cold mountain air meets sea breezes over the same hills. Alongside Montepulciano, growers have revived whites like Pecorino and Passerina, and the best Trebbiano d'Abruzzo can age for decades.
Why you should care
Abruzzo gives more pleasure for the money than almost anywhere in Italy. It is also where you can taste how much a supposedly simple grape can do when a grower cuts yields and takes it seriously.
