Müller-Thurgau
A crossing of Riesling and Madeleine Royale grown at altitude in Trentino and Alto Adige, particularly in the Val di Cembra. It gives a light, aromatic wine with green apple, elderflower and a herbal note, low in alcohol and best drunk young.
Worth knowing
It was bred in the 1880s to ripen earlier than Riesling, which in the flat vineyards of Germany produced a lot of forgettable wine. Planted instead on steep cold slopes at six hundred metres it makes something genuinely good, which was not the point of it.
