Nerello Cappuccio
The junior partner to Nerello Mascalese on Etna and in parts of Calabria. It gives deeper colour and softer, rounder fruit with less tannin and less acid, which is why the rules allow it as a minority component rather than the lead.
Worth knowing
The name is from the way the canopy grows, dense and hooded like a cape over the fruit. On Etna it is usually planted mixed in among the Mascalese in old vineyards rather than in blocks of its own, so the blend happens in the vineyard.
