Red

Piedirosso

Also called Per'e Palummo.

A Campanian red grown on the volcanic soils around Naples, on Vesuvius, in the Campi Flegrei and on the islands. It gives a medium bodied wine with red cherry, a herbal edge and a slightly rustic, iron note, with softer tannin than Aglianico and an earlier harvest.

Worth knowing

Its other name, Per'e Palummo, means pigeon's foot, for the red stalks of the bunch that fan out like a bird's claw. Some of the vineyards it grows in on the Campi Flegrei are ungrafted, because phylloxera struggles in the volcanic ash.
