The province-wide catch-all for Benevento, Campania's largest wine-producing area by volume, with the Falanghina now split off into its own DOC. What's left is a broad range of honest, inexpensive varietal wines: Aglianico with black cherry, herbs and a dusty tannin; Piedirosso that's soft and earthy; Fiano and Greco that are simpler and rounder than the Avellino versions. The subzones (Sant'Agata dei Goti, Solopaca, Guardia Sanframondi) carry more identity than the base DOC. Good hunting ground for value.
