Vernaccia Nera

A red Vernaccia from Serrapetrona in the Marche, unrelated to the white Vernaccia of San Gimignano. It gives a dark, tannic, sour cherry wine, and its local appellation turns it into something stranger: a sparkling red, dry or sweet, with real grip under the fizz.

Worth knowing

Vernaccia di Serrapetrona is made with three separate fermentations, one of which uses grapes dried through the winter and added back to restart the wine. There is nothing else quite like it in Italy, and it is made by a handful of producers in one small zone.
