What makes it special

The Marche runs from the Apennines to the Adriatic, and its best known wine, Verdicchio, is one of Italy's finest whites. It comes from two zones, Castelli di Jesi near the coast and Matelica in the hills inland.

What makes it unique

Verdicchio ages far better than its old reputation suggests, gaining weight and a savoury almond edge over a decade. The region also keeps rarities like Lacrima di Morro d'Alba and the sparkling red Vernaccia di Serrapetrona, alongside the reds of Monte Conero.

Why you should care

The Marche offers some of the best quality for the price anywhere in Italy, and it gets far less attention than it deserves.

20 of these still need a bottle. See them on the wanted list.
