Colline Novaresi DOC
The regional DOC that covers the whole Novara side of Alto Piemonte, and where the top Ghemme and Boca producers put their younger nebbiolo and their varietal vespolina. On these volcanic and glacial soils nebbiolo comes out lighter and higher in acid than Langhe versions: sour cherry, dried rose, iron, a peppery edge, tannin that's fine rather than heavy. Vespolina is the local curiosity, all white pepper, cranberry and violets. This is where the value is in Alto Piemonte right now.
