Croatina
The red of the Oltrepò Pavese and the Colli Piacentini, thick skinned and deeply coloured with soft tannin and a bitter finish. It is often made frizzante and drunk cold with salumi, which is the right way to meet it. Still versions from old vines have more to say and are worth looking for.
Worth knowing
In the Oltrepò it is labelled Bonarda, and Bonarda is also the name of a completely different Piedmontese grape, and Argentina uses the name for a third vine again. If a bottle says Bonarda, the label tells you the region and the region tells you the grape.
