Uva Rara
A red of northern Piedmont and the Oltrepò, used in small proportions to soften Nebbiolo in Gattinara, Ghemme and the wines around them. It gives red fruit, low tannin and a gentle body, and it is almost never bottled alone.
Worth knowing
The name means rare grape and refers to the bunch, which is loose and sparsely filled, rather than to the variety being scarce. In the Oltrepò it is confusingly called Bonarda Novarese, which is a third use of a name already doing two jobs.
