Also called Alicante, Gamay del Trasimeno, Garnacha, Grenache, Tai Rosso.
Sardinia's red, grown across the island and at its best in the granite hills of the Barbagia in the centre and at Jerzu in the east. Old bush vines, low yields and heat give a wine with red cherry, dried herbs, warm spice and a dusty tannin. Alcohol runs high and the good ones carry it.
Worth knowing
It is Grenache, which Spain calls Garnacha, Liguria calls Granaccia, the Veneto calls Tai Rosso and Umbria calls Gamay del Trasimeno. Sardinia argues the vine originated there rather than in Aragon, on the strength of grape remains found in Bronze Age sites on the island.
