Falanghina

Campania's white, grown on volcanic soil around the Campi Flegrei and on limestone in the Sannio hills inland. It gives citrus, green apple and a mineral, faintly smoky finish, with acid that holds up in a hot climate. It is one of the easiest southern Italian whites to like and one of the better value bottles in the country.

Worth knowing

It was close to gone. By the 1970s it survived in a handful of old plots, and the replanting that brought it back was driven by a small number of Campanian producers in the 1980s and 1990s. Most of what is planted now is younger than the people drinking it.
