Frappato
A Sicilian red from around Vittoria in the southeast, grown on red sand over limestone. Pale, light bodied and strongly perfumed, with strawberry, red cherry and a herbal lift, low in tannin and best drunk cool. It is one of the most immediately likeable red grapes in Italy.
Worth knowing
Blended with Nero d'Avola it makes Cerasuolo di Vittoria, the only DOCG on the island. The pairing is a deliberate correction: Nero d'Avola brings colour, body and alcohol, and Frappato brings the perfume and the lightness that Nero d'Avola cannot manage on its own.
