Magliocco
A Calabrian red grown in the centre and west of the region, around Lamezia, Savuto and the Cirò hinterland. Deep coloured, firmly tannic and darker fruited than Gaglioppo, with black cherry, liquorice and a savoury, herbal finish. It has been the quieter of Calabria's two serious reds and is now getting more attention.
Worth knowing
Magliocco Dolce and Magliocco Canino are related but distinct varieties with different home ground: Canino between Vibo Valentia and Lamezia Terme, Dolce from Crotone north toward the Pollino. DNA work has also shown that Gaglioppo, long called Magliocco in places, is unrelated to either.
