Pecorino

A white from the hills of the Marche and Abruzzo, with high acid, low yields and a clear character of pear, sage and citrus peel with a mineral finish. It has weight without heaviness and enough structure to age a few years. It has gone from obscure to fashionable in about two decades and the quality has largely kept up.

Worth knowing

It was effectively extinct as a commercial variety by the 1970s, surviving in a few abandoned plots in the Sibillini foothills. The name comes from sheep, either because the flocks were partial to the grapes or because the vine grew along the drovers' routes.
